Beneath The Hawthorn Tree

Garth Baxter, Composer

Category: Solo Piano

Beneath the Hawthorn Tree is one of the six short solo piano works in Songs Without Words in Miniature, a set based on art songs by Garth Baxter. Like the other pieces in the collection, it reimagines song material for piano alone, allowing melody, phrase, and atmosphere to carry the expressive meaning without text.

The piece reflects Baxter’s lyrical approach to instrumental writing, with the piano taking on the role of both singer and accompanist. Its song-based origin gives the music a natural sense of line, while the miniature form keeps the expression focused and direct.

Beneath the Hawthorn Tree is well suited for solo piano recitals, teaching settings, and programs that include contemporary lyrical miniatures. It may be performed as part of the full set or as a standalone character piece.
