La Nostalgie is a short chamber work for melody instrument and guitar, available in versions for flute and guitar and for clarinet and guitar. The piece is based on two Jewish folk songs, Tumbalalyka and Dundai, but recasts their material in a slower, more reflective mood of sadness and nostalgia.

The work belongs naturally in guitar-centered chamber repertoire, while its alternate flute and clarinet versions make it useful for different recital pairings. In each version, the guitar provides an intimate harmonic and rhythmic foundation, while the flute or clarinet carries the folk-derived melodic line with warmth and simplicity. The clarinet and guitar version was written for clarinettist Anita Thomas and guitarist Candice Mowbray.

Although the original folk songs are generally played rather quickly, La Nostalgie should not be taken too fast, since its expressive purpose depends on restraint, tenderness, and a gently nostalgic atmosphere. Baxter’s treatment preserves the directness of the folk sources while giving them a lyrical chamber character, tonal clarity, and a subtle emotional depth.

La Nostalgie is a lower-intermediate work, light enough for student performers yet musically expressive enough to interest professionals. It is well suited for flute and guitar recitals, clarinet and guitar programs, student performances, chamber concerts, and programs featuring folk-inspired contemporary classical music.
