Long Ago is an aria from near the end of Act I of Lily. Lily has begun to realize that her life is spiraling downward: what once seemed secure is now fragile, and she is in danger of losing everything.

The aria reflects her longing for an earlier time when life seemed easier and everything appeared to be falling into place. At the same time, she is deeply concerned for Selden’s well-being, giving the aria both personal regret and emotional tenderness.

Long Ago calls for expressive breadth, lyrical phrasing, and a clear sense of Lily’s emotional turning point. The singer should convey nostalgia, fear, and concern without losing the aria’s elegant vocal line.
