The Silver Run is a two-movement work for flute and piano in a neo-romantic style, inspired by the natural beauty of the Silver Run area of Carroll County, where Garth Baxter lives. The first movement, in ternary form, centers on a lyrical chromatic melody introduced at the opening. Its contrasting middle section develops a transitional motive from the first section, giving the movement both expressive continuity and structural clarity. The second movement is also cast in ternary form and is more upbeat in character, balancing an active lyrical theme with a second theme that is more rhythmic and chromatic.
